The Mobile Adoption Unit that we are hoping to introduce in Auckland involves what we call ‘ off site adoptions ‘. One of our most vital roles in saving animal llives is our ability to adopt unwanted and abused animals into loving new homes, and to achieve this we need to reach out to the larger Auckland community to offer those animals awaiting adoption to the vast Auckland region. Many people will not travel to our animal village at Mangere, and so we have to go out to them. In large cities around the world SPCA’s have found that almost 40% of their adoptions can occur off-site if they go out to the community.
So, its all about adopting, and therefore saving more animals.
We believe it will cost in the region of $ 100, 000 to fully equip a Mobile Adoption Unit. It will operate throughout the Auckland region and will adopt dogs, cats and small animals. It will appear at shows, but also key retail areas throughout the Auckland region and suburbs, and it will be the first such unit in the country.
It will be operated by Auckland SPCA staff and volunteers, and we are hoping to have the unit ready to go before the end of the year. And it will help adoptions…….. undoubtedly yes……….. and it will save precious animal lives!
